Simon Madden swaps Tallaght for Richmond
Article by Kieran Burke - @KieranBTS. In one of the biggest deals of the off-season so far, former Shamrock Rovers captain Simon Madden has swapped the Tallaght Stadium for Richmond Park and Liam Buckley’s St.Patrick’s Athletic.
Released by Stephen Bradley’s side to the surprise of many, Madden had been linked with a host of League of Ireland clubs including Waterford FC and his former side Derry City. It’s easy to see why the right-backs signature was such a highly valued commodity too with Madden making well over 200 career appearances in his senior career. A former Leeds United academy player, Madden has represented a host of top clubs ranging from two spells with Shamrock Rovers to stints with Darlington, Dundalk and Derry City while also representing Ireland at under-21 level.
In what has been a busy couple of days for legendary ‘’Saints’’ boss Buckley, Madden arrives at the club off the back of yesterday’s contract extensions for Lee Desmond and Michael Barker, while Ryan Brennan was the first of the Inchicore clubs high profile signings from Bray Wanderers a couple of weeks ago.
Finally, Thomas Byrne is also a new recruit for a St.Pat’s side targeting a return to European football next season off the back of a below par showing in 2017 which narrowly saw the Dublin club avoid relegation. Irish underage international Byrne joins the ‘’Saints’’ from recently relegated Drogheda United and will add to Liam Buckley’s striking options at Richmond Park.
