In what has been a slow news day in terms of League of Ireland transfer deals being done, Drogheda United have confirmed that 3 of last seasons relegation squad have re-signed ahead of the 2018 season. Also, Shamrock Rovers have confirmed exciting news as that they will take part in the Atlantic Cup that is due to take place in early 2018.
With confirmation of the new management at United Park coming in the last few days through an interesting combination of Tim Clancy as Manager and Dave Robertson as Director of Football, Drogs have confirmed that Sean Brennan, Kevin Farragher and Conor Kane have all re-signed ahead of the Boynesiders return to the First Division in 2018.
The signing of this trio are Tim Clancy’s first deals of the transfer window and signal the start of his intention to look to youth and experience ahead of the new campaign in waiting. Kane and Brennan both featured heavily during last season’s ill-fated campaign and will most certainly be looking forward to regaining Premier Division status for “Drogs”.
Farragher also re-signs, as the 24-year-old centre-back will hope to recreate his heroics from the 2016 season which saw the former St Patricks Athletic Under 19 star score a crucial goal in their incredible Relegation/Playoff turnaround win over Wexford Youths.
In other news, Shamrock Rovers have confirmed that they will compete in the Atlantic Cup due to take place in Portugal as part of the Hoops’ pre-season preparations before the start of the season. Potential opponents for Stephen Bradley’s men include IFK Norrkoping and Hammarby IF of Sweden, FK Jablonec of the Czech Republic, Beijing Guoan FC of the Chinese Super League and three-time tournament veterans AGF Aarhus of Denmark.
The tournament will commence on the 29th of January and will take place for a total of 10 days with the final of the tournament due to take place on February 6th. This will be Shamrock Rovers third time taking part in an overseas pre-season competition with tours in both India and Spain having occurred in recent years.
