Ex-Longford man Friel signs for Finn Harps.

Strabane native and former Athlone Town, Wexford Youths and Longford defender, Aidan Friel has signed for Finn Harps.

The twenty-six-year-old right back was in and out of ‘’De Town’’ team, following the arrival of new manager Neale Fenn at the mid-way point of the 2017, which saw the Midlands outfit finish in a disappointing mid-table position.

As for Friel’s new side, Finn Harps were relegated from the Premier Division last season, a division Friel had experience of with Wexford Youths in 2016. However, the majority of the full-backs League of Ireland experience has been in the second tier, having signed for Athlone Town from local side Strabane Athletic in 2015.

Regarded as an attack-minded full-back, Friel joins Harp veterans Paddy McCourt and Gareth Harkin, who both re-signed for Ollie Horgan last week. Horgan himself only signed a new two-year deal to stay at the Donegal club in the past fortnight and the popular manager will be aiming to recreate Harps successful promotion season of 2015, where Limerick FC were famously overturned in a two-legged promotion/relegation play-off thanks to a last-gasp BJ Banda winner at Finn Park.

Speaking to www.FinnHarps.com, Horgan had this to say on the acquisition of Friel:

“Aidan has been playing League of Ireland football for the past three years so that is a big plus for me that he has agreed to sign. He’s a right-back and with Ethan Boyle gone it’s important that we got experienced cover in for that position.’’

Finn Harps will find out their opening day opponents for the 2018 SSE Airtricity League First Division when the fixtures are released on December 19th.
