Following Friday nights scoreless draw at the Tallaght stadium between defending double champions, Dundalk and 2019 title hopefuls Shamrock Rovers, “Lilywhites” first-team coach, John Gill praised the charterer of the Dundalk players, stating “We came up to the home of Rovers, we took the game to them and it says a lot about this group of players that we are disappointed we haven’t come away with three points.”

While admitting the champions final ball let them down at times, Gill and his Dundalk counterparts were left feeling somewhat aggrieved by the denial of a potential late penalty, as Rovers defender, Lee Grace took a chance in the dying embers of the game, with what appeared to be a somewhat clumsy two-footed challenge inside the eighteen-yard box. Speaking to Between the Stripes TV after the match, Gill had this to say on the Town’s late penalty appeal:

“I thought we had a very good shout for a penalty near the end there. The lads are adamant that Lee Grace went in with two feet.”

Pushed for further analysis on the officials decision to only award a corner kick and not a spot kick, former Drogheda United assistant, Gill queried if perhaps the assistant referee could have done more to help the man with the whistle.

“It did (look clumsy), we were all up for it, the players were all up for it and our crowd on the far side. Could the linesman on the far side maybe have given the referee a bit more of a better hand at times, particularly for that one but look, overall we’re disappointed not to come away with the three points.”

Praising the latest man of the match performance from midfield engine Chris Shields, news emerged late last night via local sources in County Louth that Shields may require a scan on a knee injury picked up during proceedings. With Patrick McEleney and Robbie Benson already on the long term injury list, the Dundalk FC management team will be desperate Shields is back available for action sooner rather than later.
