Fenn targeting summer additions

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, Longford Town boss Neale Fenn has admitted he will look to bolster his squad during the mid-season break. Defeating Midland rivals Athlone Town 3-1 at the City Calling Stadium on Saturday night, to move back to within a single point of league leaders Shelbourne, Fenn admitted he could be forced to let a number of players leave “De Town” due to a lack of minutes this season.

“I’m sure we’ve got a few lads who aren’t playing who will want to move on and that’s right they want to play but hopefully we can get something done” remarked Fenn, as he spoke to Kieran Burke for the latest episode of Between the Stripes TV’s LOI review show on YouTube.

Despite a fantastic start to the 2019 campaign with only two defeats from thirteen league games, Longford Town have been among the lowest scorers in the First Division and naturally that has led to speculation “De Town” may be in the market for a striker this summer.

Ahead of last nights victory over Athlone Town, a game the hosts dominated from start to finish, Fenn opted to make a number of changes to his starting eleven after two consecutive defeats against Cabinteely and Galway United. Paul O’Connor, who signed from Bray in the off-season, came into the midfield as did Sam Verdon, who returned from Finn Harps just a few weeks into the 2019 season. As a result, many supporters have speculated Fenn may also look to bolster his options in wide positions with the likes of Peter Hopkins, Carlton Ubaezuonu and Adam Evans all struggling for consistency this season. Interestingly, none of the three played a part in last nights derby win with only Hopkins making the match day squad. Karl Chambers made a welcome return from the bench and the youngster will be hoping he can force his way back into the managers plans having failed to see action at all since the away win in Drogheda four weeks ago.

Longford Town travel to Tolka Park next Friday for a top of the table showdown in the First Division and you can watch interviews with Conan Byrne and Neale Fenn ahead of that mouthwatering clash on episode 9 of Between the Stripes TV’s LOI review show below.
