EXCLUSIVE: Derry close to agreeing Junior loan extension

Derry City’s on loan attacking sensation, Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe revealed exclusively on last nigh't’s Series 3-Episode 14 of Between the Stripes LOI podcast that a deal is “very close” to being agreed upon between the “Candystripes” and his parent club, Colchester United, over an extension to his current loan deal. Due to return to the English Football League club in July, Junior has lit the Brandywell Stadium up in recent weeks with some eye-catching performances, most notably during Friday’s 4-0 trouncing of local rivals Finn Harps, with the former non-league striker registering the opening goal of the night to the delight of the Derry City faithful, who have taken the Englishman to heart since arriving at the club in the off-season.

Having played for no less than eleven different clubs, not including two loan spells, twenty-five-year-old Junior has struggled to settle throughout his career but under Declan Devine, Junior has made seventeen appearances and impressed greatly for the European hopefuls with his pace, dribbling skills and creative thinking on the ball all standing out.

As a result, it is no surprise to see the EA Sports Cup semi-finalists keen to hold onto Junior, who stated his desire to remain on Bogside when speaking to Kieran Burke & Jonathan Brier during last night’s show.

“There’s been a lot of talks about staying until the end of the season, I’m happy here and everything is good” said Junior before going on to confirm a deal to keep him at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium was now close to been completed.

“There’s talks and I think both clubs are close to agreeing terms so fingers crossed and let’s see what happens.”

Despite most of Junior’s senior football experience coming in the non-leagues in England, the attacker does in fact have a major trophy on his CV, having lifted the Cypriot cup in 2017 with Türk Ocağı Limasol S.K. With his current club now into the last four of the league cup, a competition Derry City have won more times than anyone else, Junior is understandably keen to stick around in an attempt to taste more silverware success.

“That would be great (to win the EA Sports Cup) and obviously we’ve got a home draw versus Waterford so I’m looking forward to it and hopefully I’ll be around for that game and we can win it” remarked Junior.
