Gill stresses importance of winning mentality

Despite a positive performance at home on the opening night of the 2019 SSE Airtricity League campaign, Dundalk FC first-team coach, John Gill expressed his disappointment in his sides finishing against Sligo Rovers, as last seasons double winners spurned multiple opportunities, including an early penalty, to only secure an opening day point at Oriel Park.

Almost three-and-a-half thousand supporters flooded into the Carrick road venue on opening night for the visit of Liam Buckley’s “Bit O’Red” and the “Lilywhite” faithful were almost treated to a perfect start when Robbie Benson was taken down by Ed McGinty for a Dundalk spot-kick but sensationally, Patrick Hoban couldn’t apply the finishing touch, which brought the Galway native twenty-nine league goals last season. In fact, Hoban had something of an off night and when asked by Between the Stripes TV reporter, Kieran Burke, if the number nine’s early penalty miss had affected his overall showing on the night, Gill commented:

“Yeah, and he missed another header early on but look if he wasn’t getting there on the end of chances it’a different but he’s there to miss them and if we create as many chances as we did tonight I’ve no doubt he’ll hit twenty-nine league goals again.”

Despite high profile wins for both Shamrock Rovers and St.Patrick’s Athletoc on Friday night, two sides many expect to push the defending champions all the way this season, Dundalk’s management team are unlikely to panic should the dressing room suffer a slow start this season, having drawn three of the opening four games under Stephen Kenny in 2018, a year that ended with a domestic double. Asked regarding the importance of an away win in Donegal against Finn Harps next time out, Gill pointed to the importance of building a winning momentum in every competition.

“Yes it’s important to get the win (in Donegal) but it’s important to get the win on Monday against Athlone in the Leinster Senior Cup, it’s important to win every game, again we aren’t disappointed with our performance tonight.

Finally, again speaking on tomorrow’s visit of Athlone Town to Oriel Park, John Gill confirmed that “nobody involved in the game tonight (V Sligo Rovers) will feature on Monday night against Athlone.
