Fenn lays down challenge to players after consecutive defeats.

Longford Town manager, Neale Fenn cut a dejected figure on Friday night, following a second consecutive First Division defeat, this time on the road to Galway United. Having lost out for the first time this season to Cabinteely a week previous, Town were expected to bounce back away to ninth placed Galway at Eamon Deacy Park, however, a Vinny Faherty second half double sent the points the way of the “Tribesmen”, which saw Fenn lay down the law post match, as he spoke to Between the Stripes TV.

“Maybe we are smelling ourselves a little because we were top (of the league). The boys have got to realise they can’t keep giving the ball away, it happened last week against Cabo and it’s happened tonight twice, giving the ball away in bad areas and we got punished for it.”

Given the Longford bosses comments, Fenn was then asked if perhaps the players needed to adjust their mentality in such situations with the former league winner with Bohemians and Cork City declaring he would make changes if players didn’t perform as expected.

“We’ve got to be better, they are in the team because we trust them in possession and they’ve got to stop letting themselves down. If you can’t put the ball in the box we will get someone who will, if you can’t get on the end of the ball we will get someone who will.”

Having set a new unbeaten club record to start the season, this is now a test of character for Fenn's charges as “De Town” now look to bounce back with a big win in next Saturday’s Midlands derby at home to Athlone. With Terry Butler’s side shipping five goals in a heavy defeat against Bray this weekend, Longford will have to cope with the pressure of being overwhelming favorites ahead of this blockbuster fixture.

With last weeks conquerors Cabinteely also going down by a cricket score last night at home to Drogheda United, perhaps Longford’s dip in form has come at the right time. However, with the likes of Bray Wanderers, Shelbourne and now even Drogheda begging to circle, this is now a crucial test and period in Longford Town’s season.
