Henderson hits out at "disappointing" league launch

Cobh Ramblers manager, Stephen Henderson held no punches appearing on last nights Between the Stripes LOI podcast First Division preview show, admitting he did indeed walk out of last Tuesday’s official SSE Airtricity League launch at the Aviva Stadium, labeling the lack of First Division acknowledgment at the event as “disappointing".
“I think I was a little bit disappointed because there was nothing on the First Division. I expressed that to Fran (Gavin), it’s disappointing as I think it’s a time we all rode in together, I mean there’s only twenty bloody clubs” said the former Waterford United chief in conversation with podcast co-hosts, Kieran Burke & Jonathan Brier.
It wasn’t just the apparent lack of promotion for the second tier that irked “Hendo”, as he is affectionately known by followers of the domestic game, but the fact that the powers that be scheduled the league launch just three days before the opening round of games in the Premier Division also left the Ramblers boss displeased.
“I mean, is the six month break we had without football in this country not long enough, why the need to have the launch three days before the start of the season, I don’t know” commented the passionate First Division manager.
Queried as to whether or not the ten First Division clubs could perhaps look into conducting some sort of independent launch day, separate from the annual official FAI ran gig, Henderson dismissed such a suggestion, again pointing to the limited number of clubs currently operating at League of Ireland level.
“No (we shouldn’t do an independent launch), I don’t think we should be separating them because there is only twenty bloody teams, for Christ sake, how difficult is it to launch twenty teams?”
With Fran Gavin revealing at last weeks league launch that he is an avid listener to numerous League of Ireland podcasts, it would certainly be interesting to know if the FAI’s top domestic man was tuned in to Henderson’s comments but none the less for Cobh, all attention will now turn to Friday’s First Division opener away to last seasons beaten play-off contestants, Drogheda United.
